About Zimbabwe Graphical Workers Union

The ZIMBABWE Graphical workers union was formed in the 1950s and is registered with the Ministry of Labour, Public and Social Welfare in terms of Section 36 of the
Labour Act. Zimbabwe Graphical Workers Union (ZGWU) is an organization whose membership consists of workers and union leaders, united to protect and promote their common interests. They are a membership driven organization which represents the interests and protects the rights of the employees in the Printing, Packaging and Newspaper Industry.

ZGWU represents its members at different levels, which are shop floor, national and at the courts i.e. conciliation, mediation, arbitration, Labour Court and or the Supreme
Court. The main purpose of this trade union is maintaining or improving the conditions of employment in the Printing, Packaging and Newspaper Industry. Their objectives include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies through collective bargaining.

The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members and negotiates labor contracts (collective bargaining) with employers.
ZGWU has a constitution which details the governance of their bargaining unit. The union acknowledges the need for the government, employers and labour to work
together as social partners to promote, defend and advance workers rights interest and aspirations. ZGWU strives to achieve social, economic and political aspirations and
well being of its members through engaging into social dialogue at national, regional and international levels. ZGWU is one of the oldest trade unions in Zimbabwe, which was formerly Rhodesian Typographical Workers Union.


ZGWU currently represent 1500 employees across Zimbabwe and they are a member of the National Employment Council. Internationally they are a member of Uni-Global
Union which is based in Switzerland. ZGWU is comprised of a President, Vice President, General Secretary, four regional Chairpersons, National Organizing Secretary and other several national council members mentioned hereunder:
